Winter Raven

The Blog

My name's Teya and Winter Raven is my personal blog. I have a variety of tastes so you'll most likely see that translated into my entries. I'm back onto the blogging scene after my roughly about a year haitus. Hopefully I"ll bring a fresh perspective!

October 27th, 2008 // Online Shopping

Recently I’ve been slightly addicted to online shopping… Ever since I got that gift card for amazon.com, I saw some cute clothes on UrbanOutfitters , and Threadless.com began offering $9 t-shirts.

But on more serious note…. Buy Textbooks (for college, etc.) ONLINE! It’s a lot cheaper (and typically you dont need your books right away in the beginning of classes).

September 24th, 2008 // Photoshop Deprived -> Gimp?!

I’m going to spend this entry ranting about my lack of photoshop. And yes, it is very depressing for someone who is addicted to graphic design and does it whenever s/he is bored. So the situation is that I got a Mac for college and my copy of photoshop is meant only for windows. Alas, what am I to do? I could go into the potentially illicit activities regarding software that often occur in the freelance/amateur graphic design community, but thing is I’m on the college internet where everything is easily tracked.

So meanwhile, I downloaded Gimp which is a weaker, uglier (not to mention not as user friendly interface) version of photoshop. But don’t let me discourage people who dont have access to Photoshop :). It’s a much better graphic editing program than MSpaint (and might I mention I learned that macs dont even have a paint program :[ )… So give it a try if you’re just starting graphic design and don’t have PS or PSP, etc.

August 26th, 2008 // COLLEGE LIFE

I just moved into my dorms and classes are starting soon so this will be a bit unactive. Also I got a macbook and I don’t have Photoshop installed (nor do I have the software sadly) .

Wish me luck in college :)

July 25th, 2008 // Comic-Con Day 1+2

Day 1
The first day of Comic-con was definitely very hectic. Not to mention, there were a huge amount of people who came ONLY for twilight. (I think I saw more team Edward shirts than team Jacob ones ;) ). Anyways, so I tried to get a ticket for an autograph; however, they were only offering 75 and they were giving it out as a drawing. People pulled out raffle tickets and the ones with a sticker on them were given a chance for an autograph. Sadly, I didn’t get it. The mob though was crazy. Honestly, I think the preteen/teenage fan base is the scariest of all because not only do they mob, they also scream in REALLY high voices at just about EVERYTHING. After my failed attempt, I decided to attend this panel featuring Stan Lee (responsible for comics like Spiderman and X-men) and this other comic book writer(?). It was REALLY entertaining. Stan Lee is such a hilarious guy!!! I’m glad I watched that. Following that I went to get in line to watch the Summit Entertainment Trailer/Panels. I saw Push, Knowing, and TWILIGHT. Push was really interesting… Dakota Fanning was there!! Knowing is sort of creepy. And well Twilight just got the whole crowd screaming. The panel conversations were a bit entertaining. I think the actors really realized how popular the movie was with all that action. I hope it doesnt get to their heads though. I suggest you guys try to find the thing recorded on youtube or something, my camera ran out of battery :(. After walking around some more I had to go volunteer (I got into Comic-Con for free as long as I did 3 hours a day). We worked as ‘line guards’ (try to control the crowds coming into buildings). But luckily we did nothing and we got to watch the preview trailers and panels that were playing in that room. I saw Gerrard (I forgot his last name but he was in Phantom of the Opera) there promoting his film Rockin-rolla. AND, I also saw Rain (the korean hip hop artist/dancer) promoting this one movie about ninjas/samurai I think. Later on around 10PM, I went to go watch a screening of the movie Sex Drive (which won’t come out into theatres until October) and it was actually not bad despite some vulgar humor. It’s rated R, so definitely not for kids, and honestly the sexual stuff is not something I like to watch. However there are clever jokes and the ending is just cute :).

Day 2
My friends and I decided to wait in line to watch the Watchmen trailer/previews/panel. It seems like a really interesting movie despite the fact that it is so dark and a bit gory. I believe part of the trailer was shown as a preview for Dark Knight at movie theaters. After that I went to the Summit Entertainment booth and FINALLY got a Twilight Poster (yay!). Last but not least, volunteering time! This time it was extremely boring-sitting around with nothing to do boring. We got put in this room to distribute freebies that were redeemed by raffle tickets…. VERY UNEVENTFUL.

July 24th, 2008 // Comic-Con Day 0

It’s day 0 because it was PREVIEW NIGHT (only for awesome people = four-day attendees and volunteers). It was really exciting because I had never gone to Comic-Con before and it was MUCH bigger than Anime Expo. I had to wait like more than an hour just register and get into preview night. Then, when I got in there was such a rush of people. One thing I learned though, is that if you want freebies, don’t spend time strolling around the small shops section and go to the bigger company booths! There were really long lines for some freebies though. Or at times they’d just let people rush. Being short is a good and a bad thing because you can squeeze through but tall people can just stick their hands over you anyway.

As for the Summit Booth featuring twilight, you had to get a voucher to spin a ‘prize wheel’. The wheel basically had three different movies: Twilight, Push (?) and Sex Drive (a supposed comedy, you guys get your mind out of the gutter). You get posters/cards/etc of that movie. So basically you had a 1 in 3 chance. Honestly, everyone pretty much came for twilight. Sadly I ended up getting a poster for the movie Sex Drive featuring James Mardsen (ENCHANTED!! <3). Luckily though, the girl I was talking to behind me ended up getting Twilight and she gave me one of the smaller posters :). I’ll probably end up going to the Summit Booth again tomorrow, LOL. *crazy twilighter* I need to get stuff for my sis anyway though. She’s more obsessed than I am.

July 21st, 2008 // music! pandora

I’ve been listening to music at Pandora Radio. It’s a really nice site to find new music and not have to download a bunch of it to listen.

July 19th, 2008 // Twilight Series

I might as well post about this series of books. Basically it’s almost a fantasy chick flick transformed into a novel. Boy meets girl. Boy and girl fall in love. Boy happens to be a vampire. Honestly, the whole vampire thing wasn’t very appealing to me. But you should definitely give this book a chance if you like cute love stories with a little drama.

Plug: Breaking Dawn, the fourth book in the series is coming out AUGUST 2nd!! I just preordered the book yesterday :D

July 12th, 2008 // NEW!

Hi Everyone!

Winter Raven is now open (with not a lot of content, but still…). Well, some of you probably none of you might remember this blog from way back in 2005/6. But yeah, basically I decided to bring it back to life. Hopefully I’ll keep it updated.

The new layout features a picture from the anime Serial Experiments: Lain. I’ve never actually seen the anime (maybe I saw one episode…) but I did like the picture :).

Btw: THANK YOU KIEU http://thedreambox.org for hosting me
